The wasp is a common insect in many places over the globe. In Sweden we have 36 different species, but globally seen there are over 3000 species. The adult wasps eat fruit and nectar but not the younger ones, they are fed with other insects caught and chewed by the adults. These are peaceful insects - if you don’t disturb them. If you mess with them they can be a bit cranky and might just bite you. In Sweden they cause the greatest amount of deaths of all living things - if you don’t count the humans themselves. They defend themselves with a sting supplied with venom. Some of us are allergic towards this venom and for those it may cause an allergic reaction. The Wasp builds nests where they spend the winter. These nests may be located in private areas in our houses and some in the wild outside. They are also found under ground - so called earth-wasps, which are not specific wasps - just ones that decided to make nests there - especially the German-wasp likes the ground for its home. Why the earth-wasps are seen to be more aggressive is probably because one might set a foot in their home, which might make them a bit upset. A common tip not to get bitten is to sit still and ignore the wasp - they are just checking you out. Until next time enjoy the wasp and let your bug-mind fly free.
