PDE consulting, a new company with a new logotype

by Sven R. Ohlson on September 21, 2009

in Logotypes

This year, in times like this, more and more people need help and career-coaching more than ever. When workers loose their jobs or when a manager needs to step up his game – you might need a career-coach. Pia D. Ekdahl is an expert in this field and has recently started up a business of her own – after many years working as an employee it was time to move on.

The logotype is to give the company a face and a front that she can use in meeting new clients and companies in need of assistance. It is the initials of her name put together like sails on a boat flowing forward in the wind. Just like the clients she will help and coach into a better future.

Good luck to you and your new company.

THF The Royal Institute of Technology’s Flight Club

by Sven R. Ohlson on September 14, 2009

in Logotypes

THF stands for Tekniska Högskolans Flygklubb – this is a flight-club where you can learn to fly and also join the club and use their aeroplanes. They have Cherokees and a Piper Cub. Here a lot of young students get the opportunity to have flight lessons and take their flying license.

THF then give out and sell stickers and badges to their members – and they wanted to make a new badge and sticker for this year. I was asked to help out and I made the eagle in silver or as shown here in grey – an eagle spreading its wings and flying away up into the sky.

The head of an eagle

by Sven R. Ohlson on September 7, 2009

in Logotypes

I have been designing a bird symbol for an aviation club. While doing so I have been sketching and designing a few birds in different styles. The bird I have made in this design is an eagle, or the bold-headed eagle. I have given the bird a cool and a bit of a strict look – to show how powerful this bird can be.

The final design for the aviation club is not set yet – but they have asked for a cartoon feeling and it is meant to be more fun than this one. I just liked this design too – so I thought it would be a nice post. Maybe an other company, wild-life organization or aviation club might want this eagle as their symbol. That remains to find out.

Hope you enjoy the design or can recommend to me to a company that would need a bold eagle as their logotype. They might like just this one and want to purchase it.

There is something fascinating with birds and the way they fly in the air – in swift easy moves in the sky, as they flow past you. They are beautifully aero-dynamic and they never seem to get tired of flying.

It is nice to look up in the sky and see all these different species. I have also studied the kestrel’s head – a bit extra carefully this time – given it a bit of a side view, but not completely a silhouette.

There is a brand called “Falcon” that brew beer and have a falcon as their main symbol or logotype. It is a bit stiff and shown from the side – a stylistic logo, but I felt like giving this one an extra dimension as you can see. This gives a little bit more of a personal touch. Yet, this is nothing that they have asked me to do. I just thought of it the other day, when I was served a cold beer from this brewery with a nicely barbequed meal.

The beer you must try yourself – and see if it gives you that flying feeling, that they usually have in their commercials. I have tried a few different ones and think that they are quite good. Now, I am not a beer expert of any kind… but I think this would be a great alternative look for their logotype.

I wonder if I should send them the Kestrel head – as a suggestion for a new look for next year – or if they would ever launch a new type of beer!

I heard that there was a competition going on for the Sami People’s theatre. They are looking for a good name and logotype. The Sami People live in the northern part of Scandinavia – Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. As an old tradition they have used drums and in particular one special kind of drum that has a very characteristic oval shape. The “Nåjd” used the drum. “Nåjden” was a kind of medicine-man. So I suggested that the theatre should be called “The Drum Theatre”.

I have then used the shape of the drum as a logotype. The skins on the drums often had drawings on them. That is why I have placed two “Ts” inside the oval shape. The “T” is a Sami “T” with an extra bar crossing the vertical bar. The two “Ts” stand for “Teahter Trumman”. A lot of old drawings and symbols were often written in red or dark-red. So I thought the red would be a good symbolic colour.

If you ever travel to Scandinavia – take your time and visit the Sami People.

A stylish ribbon and the letter ”E”

by Sven R. Ohlson on January 14, 2009

in Logotypes

I am working on a logo or symbol with an “E”. I have looked at a lot of different styles and fonts for inspiration. This is an older, more authentic, style – which was inspired by a book I was looking in the other day. It was a portal or statue over a door of an old building. Leaves and circular shapes – very well made indeed.

The centre part of this logotype is made to look like a ribbon and the leaves round about are to give the same feeling as the “Ribbon E”.

Shock and Awe, a floor-ball team, Innebandy team

by Sven R. Ohlson on November 12, 2008

in Logotypes

I have been off with some of my friends to play some floor-ball – a kind of indoor hockey. In Sweden it’s called “Innebandy”. It is played with sticks made of plastic and a round plastic ball. There are a lot of different leagues and series that one can play in. We have some kind of training once a week – I like it a lot and it’s very nice to run about for an hour or so – six guys chasing a ball. Even better if you can score some goals and count points and see what team won this evening.

We joined a league called SIL and play in a very low division, but it is still a lot of fun and the whole team enjoys it a lot. Someone in the team came up with the name “Shock and Awe”. They thought it would give a good feeling. I also thought the team needed a logotype. I made a cartoon-inspired skull. I made some spikes coming out of the skull as well to give it some extra edge. I have actually made a team-shirt too. I’ll show it later on.

Go go SHOCK AND AWE!

An Art Nouveau inspired logotype, Rue du Pont Nouveau

by Sven R. Ohlson on November 3, 2008

in Logotypes

The last month or so, I have been doing lots of interesting designs and projects. One of them is coming to an end really soon. It’s a restaurant and patisserie that is going to open at the end of October. I have designed the logotype and graphic feeling for this restaurant and patisserie.

The owner and founder of this restaurant is a highly prized chef and well known in his field. He has competed for the Swedish national team in cooking. His specialities are deserts and chocolates. His name is Mattias Ljungberg – also owner of the very well known bakery and konditori (tea-room) in Stockholm – Tössebageriet.

The name of the new establishment is “Rue du Pont Nouveau”. So I was asked a couple of months ago if I could, and would, help out to design a logotype. Mattias Ljungberg has asked me to give it an Art Nouveau feeling – but still give it a touch of today – a modern and suitable design for a place with style and quality.

I chose to use the “P” and the “N” in the name and combined them together – making them into a monogram or symbol if you want. I sketched out different versions of how dominant one would want one or the other letter. The bottom symbol is the one that is going to be used. It feels both like the “P” and an “N” with a touch of Art Nouveau. The ends of the vertical pillars in the logotype are inspired by the architectural style from 1890 – 1905.

I will post soon some more information about how “Rue du Pont Nouveau” turns out and more about what I have designed.

Extreme snowboards from Extrem

by Sven R. Ohlson on October 8, 2008

in Logotypes

Many years back a couple of dudes started a brand called ”Extrem”.

They made and still make snowboards, skis and clothing. Two guys started dreaming and experimenting with snowboards in the beginning of the 80’ies. The two guys were Patrik Söderlund and Stefan Cederberg who later founded the very successful company Extrem snowboards of Scandinavia 1993.

I remember one of my first snowboards made by Extrem – a white board-top with the chocolate brand ”DAIM” underneath. I thought it was awesome the day I got it… It carved snow like nothing else I had ridden. A lot has happened on the board-scene since I got that board. I wish I had progressed the same in my riding-skills – but I still enjoy getting some snow under the board and I like hitting the slopes.

So this design is for the dudes at ”Extrem” – I think they could go for this symbol/logo. It says EXTR – the short version for Extrem. Now I’m not saying that it is super important to shorten the name – just giving it a little edge. It’s clean like clean carves in fresh snow. Some of the grey areas are shades because of the blue sky and sunny days. White is to symbolize the snow – of course.

In the future soon, I will post a top deck of a snowboard to match the symbol.

The propeller has many beautiful shapes

by Sven R. Ohlson on October 3, 2008

in Logotypes

The propellers on different aeroplanes have fantastic shapes. If one ever is looking for a nice symbol or characteristic logotype – I recommend the propeller. It is also nice to have a propeller on your wall instead of a painting or something like it. The propeller lets your imagination flow and really gives you lots of super ideas.

Here I have designed a three-bladed propeller. It has this aerodynamic look – straight lines and nice curves – all meeting up and making it into a stylish symbol.

This could be a super logotype for a new airline or maybe a company that just thinks this symbol shows how broad they are. A very worldwide feeling I would say!
