Toads live a long life

by Sven R. Ohlson on August 29, 2011

Story-book toad

Through the years and story-books toads have shown up here and there. They are often elegant and a bit snobbish in their ways and looks. There are lots of good stories I must say. The wind in the willows for example… I felt like honouring that by drawing an elegant cartoon toad too.

I posted a picture for a few days ago of a toad… and then thought of how long toads actually live – and what I could find – was that they could get to be approximately 40 years old. That gives the toad that extra time in his life to become who he is – as you can see in my illustration – an experienced individual yet not so broad-sighted. Stands his ground – even though he might not be the most well educated toad on earth. Still he has a good heart and means well…

A nice toad – a lonely toad – but a toad that enjoys life – a long life!

The burdens of enjoying life

Every day you have a little thought about what to do or what you should do – and maybe you have a few things that you would rather do. The thing is it should be a joy to do them all. Or would that be a perfect world that does or doesn’t exist?

Maybe you would like just that special carrot – just like the rabbit I have drawn – or something that you just love and want more and more of… It might be a burden that it takes so much energy that you can not carry it any more – you just want it so bad that you have to get some support and help to go on further.

Or do you have to let it go…

A little moment to think about life

by Sven R. Ohlson on August 15, 2011

A mouse thinking of lifes oasis

Just a little thought, a little moment just right now. I have been out at Sillö building a little on the old jetty. Or repairing it if you will…  Had some extra time to be there and help my father getting the harbour ready for the autumn. I brought the kids along too – I think they really enjoy fixing up the old jetty. I try to show them and encourage them to enjoy the moments in life. It is a fantastic opportunity to get out in nature and smell the ocean and archipelago – INSPIRATION!

It might not be for everyone – it might not be for you. I only know that it is definitely for me. I enjoy the moments I get out in the islands – the islands of INSPIRATION!

It is nice to just take that little extra look out to sea, a little thought that makes you feel right here right now. Not worrying about life in general, what is a good thing or a bad thing. Just right now. An oasis in time I would call it. Just that little second you should enjoy.

My illustration of the mouse fishing – looking out over the water -just taking that little moment to enjoy the oasis of time. That second might not change everything… but why not?

As you can see he is sitting with some leaves behind him and branches and roots – they are made so they look like letters… they spell out ”Y´not”. Think just that little thought – why not?

Totem-pole design from the past

by Sven R. Ohlson on July 25, 2011

Totem-pole design from 1992

For many years I have been fascinated by the designs of totem-poles in North America. They are really well made and full of inspirational characters. Even the more modern – and today’s North American Indians make great designs. I have wondered in the Rocky Mountains many years ago. I also visited the Tyrell museum in Canada. If you ever get the chance – go there and see some amazing artwork.

Here is a little illustration I made for Uncle B many, many years ago. My mother still has it hung up on the wall in her summer-house!

Do you do a lot of thinking?

by Sven R. Ohlson on July 18, 2011

A brain sketch

I would say you and I do… or that’s what we are told.

I would say that a lot of processes get started right away when you meet your client – now I’m referring to myself of course and the work I do. As soon as you meet them, get a look at them, see what they wear, how they wear it, how they move, how they sit – the hand-shake, what vocabulary they use, what they are saying or what they actually are saying… You know  – a regular day – at a regular meeting.

Or one shouldn’t interpret too much at all…

Our brains are working at an amazing speed… or aren’t they?

A little sketch and cartoon-like picture of the human brain in this post will at least give you a feeling of something that gives you just that right inspiration… or natural-high, that you need to design your next artwork.

Mumin for the weekend at Mumindalen

by Sven R. Ohlson on July 11, 2011

Mumin i Mumindalen

I have been of to meet Mumin with the kids this weekend. It has been great fun to see Tove Jansson’s fairy-tale characters – the blue tower-looking house they live in and of course the beautiful surroundings too. It is situated on an Island in the Finish archipelago – and we took the “Viking-Line” to get there.

I think the kids were most fascinated that they actually were going to meet Mumin, Snorkfröken, Snusmumriken, Sniff and lots of these funny figures. Even though I think they wonder a little bit if they are for real or not.

I made some sketches and interpretations of Mumin on the way home looking out over the sea. Just to honour the characters in the tales of Mumintrollen. If you fancy these odd looking cartoons – you should definitely visit Mumin-world in Finland.

It has been a great week with beautiful weather

by Sven R. Ohlson on July 4, 2011

Sunny week and windy weekend

It has been a wonderful week – a really nice week weather-wise! Sunny every single day… well except Friday – the day I had a photo-shoot. It was a bit rainy and cloudy. Fortunately mostly cloudy – we got some good pictures anyway.  We will start working on the pictures this week. Saturday has been great too… But a bit more winds again… My inspiration and thought ran off again towards windy weather and wind-surfing. That’s why today’s post is another dude standing in the wind!

Salute people with your hat

by Sven R. Ohlson on June 20, 2011

in Illustration

A great way to salut your friends

A hat is a great accessory to wear with your clothes I must say! It gives you some protection from the sun if you are getting it in your eyes – it can give you some warmth in winter… But most of all it gives you the possibility to salute your friends or people you meet in lots of different ways. You can give a little nod – or touch the rim of the hat – or lift it up slightly – or take it off with a big swerve and make it in to a great honourable gesture.

Enjoy the salute! Honour your friends with this little extra way of saying hello!

Only got time for windy walks

by Sven R. Ohlson on June 13, 2011

Windy walks - waiting for surf

It was really windy last week – really windy! Or good winds for windsurfing! I talked to my friend Knutte and we would have got our gear and boards together and headed for the ocean… The sky was blue and the sun was out. It was really nice weather for some good Windsurfing. Even for us – since we are not the best of surfers – but we do have the heart! Why didn´t we go? – Well we had a lot of work to do – which is good too. You know – you can´t get surf-gear for free!

Well – it wasn’t anything boring to do – I have been very fortunate and been able to get a few really fun projects to do lately.

I got out for a little stretch or walk anyway. That sounded like something a very old person would say – although it is very nice just to watch the waves and winds on the water. Gives a lot of inspiration to feel the wind blow in your clothes and hair – see the wind tare off the wave-tops – white spray hitting the back of the next wave… Enjoying nature I would say! I drew this old dude to illustrate the feeling of the winds that day. Could be that it had blown a bit too hard for our surfing-capabilities anyway…

Dude in a hat

Dude in a hat illustration

I have been sketching on a fun new project today… yesterday – or more exactly for a few days and nights now. It is going to be a great and inspirational project – I’ll tell you more about it when we have come along a bit. When I am on the phone I sometimes let the thoughts run for themselves! Today it was a fat man in a hat!
